Best cash registers
In the beginning, people did not need devices to make transactions, but nowadays, even a small local shop needs a cash register. Of course, cash registers have been around for a little over a century now, and today we have the most intricate devices that can even handle our entire business. As you can imagine, that is not a bad thing, and having a device that keeps track of everything coming in is more than helpful, which is why you should invest in the best cash register for your business.
How to select the best cash register?
Choosing the best cash register is not as easy as it seems. It is not like most products where you need to check the quality, and that is it. You need to consider a number of factors, some of which you may have no idea for the time being. Rest assured that you will learn now everything you need to consider before purchasing the best cash register for your business.
Know your business
You may be tempted to buy the first cash register you see that has good reviews online, but keep in mind that most of the first products you see are meant for small businesses. Are you a small business? Do you plan to stay a small business? Because if the answer is yes to both questions, then a simple cash register is more than enough. A small inventory does not require additional features. But if you have a more extensive inventory, that means you also have more intricate inventory management, and a cash register will just not do. After all, you want to save yourself some time with that, so my advice is to go for a POS instead.
The number of items you carry is also important. Why? Because if you only have a few, a budget-friendly cash register will handle the job, but hundreds of products require, again, better inventory management and other such features, features that a cash register does not have. A point of sale will do the job better.
Also, how is your budget? Are you just starting out or you have been on the market for a while? A POS system will surely make your job easier, but it also costs more than a cash register. A small business that just started out will never be able to afford a POS system, which is why the cash register is the better way to go.
Which is better? Ink or thermal?
This refers to printing receipts, and while both solutions are okay, each comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. All conventional cash registers have an integrated receipt printer, but the printing method can differ. It either uses ink ribbons or thermal printing. The latter kind does not require ink because the paper is coated with a material called thermal paper, and it is heat sensitive. The paper will react to the thermal print heads and reproduce the image. Buyers usually go for thermal printing because they never need to replace the ink, which can be quite convenient.
However, the downside to this kind of printing is that the image will fade away in time. It may not be necessary, but if a client wants to make a return, he or she cannot without a legible receipt. Also, if your business involves high temperatures, the cash register may print out coal-black receipt because of the heat. Not a good idea for bakeries, is it? Also, the opposite is represented by cold temperatures where thermal printing will barely function. The image will be faint.
As for ink ribbons, the temperature is not an issue, so aside from the fact that you need to replace it, there are not many downsides. However, depending on the volume of sales, you may spend a few hundred of dollars a year only on ink ribbons.
Do not forget about the 3 Cs
The 3 Cs stand for cash drawers, credit cards, and customer display. The first one is something a cash register always needs to complete the system. However, not all of them are alike, and they vary in size, security level, and configuration. The size should be selected according to the number of bills and coins in the register at any given time.
As for credit cards, the terminal generally comes separate, but you need to make sure that it goes along with the register. Otherwise, you will not be able to process payments. Even so, the majority of people use credit or debit cards these days, so a credit card terminal is almost a must in every small local shop. If the device accepts NFC such as Apple Pay, that is even better. The point is that people need the possibility of paying with plastic, and you need to provide that.
The last C is about customer display. Paying with plastic may be something you can overlook for now, but the lack of customer display is not acceptable. Even the law states that the rate of an item needs to be displayed in front of the customer at the point of purchase. Lucky for you, most cash registers come with a customer display that can be rotated so that the customer as a better view. So, before you buy a cash register, make sure that it is in accordance with the law.
Efficiency and ease of use
Standing in line is no fun for anyone. The person at the cash register is in a hurry and may make a mistake, while the buyers are impatient. You need to invest in a cash register that is efficient. If you are a small business, a basic cash register should suffice, but if you are looking for more functionality, features such an LCD display, more keys, barcode scanning, and much more is to be desired. Some models even come with a software program and provide local inventory and integrated payment processing. At the end of the day, the choice is yours, but you need to consider all the aspects.
Even with all that, you need to invest in a cash register that is easy to use, and not only by you but by everyone who works it. You do not want to waste time retrieving info such as shift totals, do you? After all, chances are that you need to do that yourself because cashiers only ring up the sale. The point is that everyone who interacts with the cash register needs to have an easy time doing it. As long as it does not affect a worker’s functionality, any cash register will do. At the same time, if you indeed need a more complex model, you should take your time and teach your employees how to use the new cash register.
What are the best cash registers?
Now that you know what to consider when looking for the best cash register, it is time to make a choice. As long as you do not buy randomly and mind the specifications, you should make the best decision. Some cash registers reviews online may also help since you can read about other people’s experiences with their purchases. That way you can take advice on products that are worth or not buying. Meanwhile, take a look at the products you see below.
Casio PCR-T273 Electronic Cash Register
The first product on my list of satisfactory cash registers is a basic model that I think is suitable for small business. It is the most simple model you can go for, but if you have a small inventory, you do not even need more than this. I suppose you have heard about Casio before, and the manufacturer has an excellent price-quality ration on its products. This one is no different.
This models is efficient and features a high-speed single tape thermal printer. You are given the possibility of customizing the header of the receipt. There are two large LCD displays for both the operator and the customer, so visibility is not an issue. It has a compact design, but the cash register is fast and steady. It uses thermal printing so that you do not have to change the ink ribbons, which makes it incredibly convenient.
The Casio cash register has eight physical department keys with three shifts. The maximum number of departments is 24. There are also eight clerks with sign-on codes and reporting and 4 tax tables. The machine is very easy to use, and the drawer has a key for more security. If you have a small business, then this product is more than you need. I strongly recommend it.
Royal 120DX Electronic Cash Register and Counterfeit Bill Detector Pen
Another product that I think you may like is the one from Royal. This is somewhat more sophisticated than the former model, but I think you will enjoy it just the same. It has more features, but that does not affect its use of use. Both you and your cashiers will have an easy time operating it. Plus, the thermal printing makes it easy and cheap to maintain.
The Royal 120DX can handle 16 departments, and it includes preset department pricing for fast sales entry. You need to push only one button, and the sale is through. Moreover, it will be easier for you to analyze the sales by category of merchandise. The model features 200 price look-ups (PLUs) so that the operator can quickly and accurately insert a frequently sold item.
As for other feature, this unit has 9-digit front and rear LCD screens for perfect visibility. Also, the automatic tax computation will make the operator’s activity a whole lot easier. The device can memorize up to 4 tax rates (Add-on, VAT, Canadian tax). I am sure that you will have an easy time using it.
Sharp XEA207 Menu Based Control System Cash Register
Last but not least, if you are looking for something even more sophisticated, then the Sharp model is my final recommendation. It is an excellent cash register, and even though it comes with multiple features, they seem complicated only at first. Once you read the manual, you will be able to use it with ease.
The Sharp cash register comes with 99 pre-programmed departments so that you can easily separate product types. It also has 2500 price look-ups for more accurate entries. The unit is directly hard-wired to the credit terminal so that the operator does not have to insert the transaction amount by hand, which saves some time. The two large displays ensure perfect visibility for both user and customer.
Just like the previous two models, the Sharp cash register provides thermal printing as well. The printing speed is fast, and the operation is quiet. Moreover, the unit has an SD card slot for easy data backup, transfer, and cloning. However, one of the best parts is that the register can be linked to Quickbooks Pro, an accounting software.
You need to choose a model that best suits your necessities, but if I were you, I would go with the Sharp XEA207 Menu Based Control System Cash Register. It seems to be more complete, and it has more features. Even if you do not need them all now, you will need them later, and you will be thankful to yourself for the decision of buying it. It may be a bit pricey, but it is one of the best cash registers you can find within this price range.
I am sure that you are aware of the fact that a cash register is a must for every business, no matter how big or small, which is why you need to make the best choice for you. One of the products above will suit your needs, and if not, use the same criteria to choose a more complex unit. Click here to buy on Amazon
